Sex Crime Defense Attorney in Stillwater
Direct Defense for Sensitive Criminal Allegations
I provide hands-on defense for people accused of sexual offenses in Stillwater, Oklahoma. When you hire Taylor McLawhorn Attorney at Law, you work directly with me throughout your case rather than having critical decisions and communication passed to a paralegal or junior associate.
I draw on nearly 20 years of criminal defense experience, including work as a former prosecutor and early service with the Oklahoma County Public Defender’s Office. I’ve handled hundreds of felony, misdemeanor, drug, sex, violent crime, juvenile, and Title IX matters, including complex and sensitive cases involving alleged sexual offenses.
Call (405) 504-1858 at any time to discuss an allegation, investigation, or pending charge directly with me.
Sex Crime Charges I Defend in Oklahoma
I represent people facing sex crime allegations in Oklahoma and federal courts. Whether law enforcement has requested an interview or formal charges have been filed, I can review the accusation, explain the immediate legal issues, and begin evaluating the evidence.
My defense work includes allegations involving:
- Sexual assault
- Rape, including date rape and statutory rape allegations
- Child pornography possession, distribution, or production
- Indecent exposure
- Online solicitation
- Sexting allegations
Internet-based allegations can involve digital communications, account records, device data, and questions about who created or controlled an account. Sexual assault and rape cases may depend heavily on conflicting accounts, physical evidence, witness statements, and the sequence of events. I assess the facts and legal elements of each charge rather than treating every accusation the same way.
Defense Issues in Stillwater Sex Crime Cases
The prosecution generally must prove every element of the charged offense beyond a reasonable doubt. Depending on the accusation, those elements can include identity, the alleged act, lack of consent, and intent. The age of the person making the allegation can be an additional element when the statute makes age relevant.
Consent may be central to some adult cases, but it isn’t the only issue that requires scrutiny. Mistaken identity, false allegations, fabricated evidence, and evidence taken out of context can shape the defense. Procedural or legal errors can also raise questions about interviews, searches, digital evidence, or the admissibility of statements.
Testing the Evidence Against Each Element
I examine what the accusation claims, what the available evidence shows, and whether the prosecution can connect that evidence to each legal element. This analysis may include communications, witness accounts, investigative reports, electronic records, and the circumstances surrounding law enforcement questioning. In cases involving online activity, authorship and control of a device or account may require particular attention.
The Local Court Process
Sex crime cases arising in Stillwater are heard in the local district court, part of Oklahoma’s 9th Judicial District. The district includes two counties. Its published schedule provides for felony dockets each Friday and a preliminary hearing docket one day per month, although the timing of a particular appearance depends on the court’s schedule and the status of the case.
At a preliminary hearing, the prosecution must present enough evidence for a felony case to continue. It isn’t a trial, and the legal standard differs from proof beyond a reasonable doubt. I prepare clients for each scheduled stage and address the decisions that arise as the case develops.
